Acerca de BIOGRAPHY Evan Stuart Marshall is an award-winning mixed-media abstract artist celebrated for his quirky, whimsical paintings that bring joy and energy to any space. Born in Boston and raised in Sharon, Massachusetts, Evan now lives and works in Roseland, New Jersey. Largely self-taught, Evan has garnered numerous awards and recognition for his vibrant creations. His paintings have been featured in both solo and group exhibitions and are held in private collections around the globe. Evan’s process involves layering a diverse range of materials, including acrylic and oil paints, cold wax, collage, graphite, and found objects. Tools as unconventional as coffee-cup sleeves and plastic wrap add texture and character to his art. Each piece reveals hidden details beneath its surface, creating a dynamic interplay of shapes and colors that invite discovery. “I live in rural New Jersey, not far from New York City, and my work draws inspiration from the city’s energy and the serenity of the countryside,” says Evan. His art, blending playfulness with sophistication, offers a unique perspective that resonates with audiences everywhere. ARTIST STATEMENT My paintings reflect my optimistic view of the world. Some people call them "happy art." I typically work on several paintings at once, experimenting with materials to create new tactile effects. I scrape, blot, stencil, stamp, scratch, gouge, and even use my fingers to build the layered, textured surfaces that make my paintings so dynamic. Inspiration strikes me everywhere. Whether it’s a color combination, a pattern, or a texture I encounter in another piece of art, I bring it back to the studio and reinterpret it in my own way. Visits to galleries and museums leave me brimming with ideas to explore. I choose colors that “make my eyes happy”—a phrase I use because there’s no better way to describe the sensation. I don’t stop working on a painting until it excites me, and I aim for that same excitement to resonate with viewers. The most exhilarating part of creating a painting is starting with a blank surface and letting it guide me. My process is entirely intuitive—I make a mark, assess what’s there, and respond with another. Each painting is an adventure, a dialogue between me and the canvas, unfolding until I feel that undeniable sense of completion. Creativity has been with me my whole life. As a child, I built elaborate marble-roll "machines" for my cousins and made colorful, "psychedelic" posters for my friends. I’ve always loved art, and after experimenting with landscapes and still life early in my career, I found my true passion in abstract work more than 25 years ago. It fills me with gratitude to know that my art connects with people on a personal level. Being able to create something that sparks happiness and inspiration is the greatest reward of all—a dream come true. Collecting Abstract Art on a Budget offers practical insights for art enthusiasts who want to build a collection without breaking the bank. This excerpt introduces strategies to find and acquire beautiful, affordable abstract pieces that suit any space, showing that collecting art can be both inspiring and accessible. Dive in and discover the joys of art collecting within reach! An Excerpt From Building Your Art Business by Evan Stuart Marshall Building Your Art Business empowers artists with essential strategies to grow their brand, connect with audiences, and turn their passion into a sustainable career. In this excerpt, you'll find actionable insights that help navigate the art world’s challenges and maximize your creative potential. Dive in to discover the first steps toward building a thriving art business! Creating a sustainable art practice is about cultivating a balanced approach that ensures longevity in both your creative and business endeavors. For artists, this means finding a way to harmonize the demands of making art with the realities of earning a living, managing time, and nurturing emotional resilience. A sustainable practice allows you to continue evolving artistically, financially, and personally over the long term, without burnout or financial instability. Sustainability is built on four interconnected pillars: creative sustainability, financial sustainability, emotional sustainability, and practical sustainability. Each plays a crucial role in helping you thrive as an artist while maintaining a balanced and fulfilling career. Creative Sustainability: How to Keep Your Passion Burning Bright At the heart of any artist’s practice is the creative process. Creative sustainability ensures that your passion for art stays alive and that you have the freedom and flexibility to explore, experiment, and grow. Without this, even the most financially successful career can feel hollow or draining. Here are ways to nurture your creative sustainability: Consistent Exploration and Experimentation: Creativity thrives on exploration. Give yourself permission to experiment with new techniques, materials, and subjects regularly. Set aside time for play and risk-taking. These creative "side quests" often lead to breakthroughs or open new doors for your main body of work. Consider scheduling a “creative retreat” every few months where you focus solely on trying something new, without the pressure of creating a finished product. Establish Creative Rituals: Rituals help create a mental transition into creative work. These can be as simple as starting your studio session with a meditation, lighting a candle, or listening to specific music. Such rituals build consistency and signal to your mind that it's time to focus on your art. Maintain a Creative Journal: A journal can be a valuable tool for tracking creative ideas, inspirations, and reflections on your artistic journey. Use it to jot down thoughts, sketch, or reflect on your process. By documenting your creative thoughts, you maintain an ongoing dialogue with your inner artist, which can help spark new ideas and keep your passion alive. Set Creative Goals: While some artists find comfort in organic, unstructured creative processes, setting goals can provide direction and motivation. Creative goals might include finishing a certain number of pieces in a year, experimenting with a specific technique, completing a themed series, or planning a course or workshop. These goals help keep your work focused and ensure you're progressing over time. Stay Inspired by Surrounding Yourself with Art: Constant inspiration is crucial for creative sustainability. Regularly visit galleries, museums, or art fairs to see the work of other artists. Seek out new art forms, read books on art history or technique, or attend online artist talks. The more exposed you are to different ideas and approaches, the more fuel you’ll have to spark your own creativity. Combat Creative Burnout: Every artist faces moments when creativity wanes. To avoid burnout, recognize when you need to step back. Engage in non-art-related activities like nature walks, hobbies, or socializing. These breaks refresh your mind, allowing creativity to return naturally. Financial Sustainability: Building a Practice That Supports Your Life Financial sustainability is one of the most important, yet challenging, aspects of maintaining a long-term art practice. Building a sustainable financial foundation means ensuring that you can generate enough income to support both your art practice and personal life. Achieving this balance can provide the stability needed to continue creating without constant financial stress. Here are actionable steps for financial sustainability: Diversify Your Income Streams: Solely relying on the sale of original artworks can make income unpredictable. Explore multiple income streams such as teaching workshops, offering online courses, selling limited edition prints, creating digital products, and licensing your work for merchandise or textiles. This diversification ensures that even if one revenue stream slows down, others can help fill the gap. Develop Passive Income Avenues: In addition to selling original works, look for ways to earn passive income. This could include selling prints through print-on-demand services, licensing your art for products, or offering downloadable resources like eBooks or digital templates. Passive income allows you to generate earnings even when you're not actively creating new pieces. Pricing Your Art Effectively: Setting the right price for your work is crucial for financial sustainability. Make sure your pricing covers not only the cost of materials and time but also factors in your level of experience, the demand for your work, and your target market. Be confident in your pricing—don't undervalue your art out of fear. A well-calculated pricing strategy can help you maintain consistent sales and reinforce the perceived value of your work. Track Your Expenses and Revenue: Keeping detailed records of your art-related income and expenses is essential. Track everything—from supplies to shipping costs to the time spent on each piece. Not only does this help you understand your actual profit margins, but it also allows you to adjust your prices, make smarter financial decisions, and prepare for tax time. Consider using accounting software designed for small businesses, like QuickBooks or Wave, to keep your finances organized. Financial Cushion for Stability: Building a financial safety net is essential for a sustainable practice. Aim to save a portion of your income for unexpected expenses or slower sales periods. A financial cushion allows you to navigate tough times without compromising your creative practice. Plan for Taxes: If you’re a freelance artist, you’ll likely be responsible for your own taxes. This means setting aside a portion of your income for taxes and keeping meticulous records. Consider working with a tax advisor who specializes in the art world to help you navigate deductions and ensure you’re not caught off guard come tax season. An Excerpt From Abstract Art Revolution by Evan Stuart Marshall Abstract Art Revolution is an inspiring guide that explores innovative ways to use abstract art to transform your living and working spaces. Designed for art lovers and interior enthusiasts alike, this book unveils creative strategies for integrating abstract art into your environment, boosting positivity, and enhancing functionality. From personalizing spaces to sparking conversation, Abstract Art Revolution helps you unlock the transformative power of abstract art in your everyday life. When we think about where to place art in our homes or offices, we often focus on living rooms, dining areas, or bedrooms—spaces designed for relaxation or socializing. However, some of the most functional spaces, like kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms, are often overlooked as canvases for creativity. These rooms serve practical purposes but can be transformed into areas of visual delight with the right abstract art. In this chapter, we’ll explore how abstract art can elevate these functional spaces, infusing them with color, personality, and creative energy. Why Art in Functional Spaces? Functional spaces are often associated with routine tasks and utilitarian design. Adding abstract art to these areas can create an unexpected touch of beauty, offering a refreshing break from the functional nature of the room. Art in kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms can enhance the aesthetic appeal of these spaces while providing moments of visual inspiration in everyday activities. Example: Imagine preparing your morning coffee in a kitchen that features a large, vibrant abstract painting. The artwork adds a sense of energy and liveliness to your routine, transforming an ordinary activity into something more engaging. Kitchens: Energizing the Heart of the Home The kitchen is often referred to as the heart of the home, and for good reason—it’s where we cook, eat, and gather with family and friends. But kitchens are also highly functional spaces, filled with appliances and practical tools. Abstract art can be the perfect addition to soften the room’s utilitarian feel and create a more welcoming atmosphere. Choosing the Right Artwork: In a kitchen, consider abstract art that reflects the energy and vibrancy of the space. Bold, dynamic pieces with warm colors can complement the warmth of cooking and conversation. Alternatively, cooler tones can bring a sense of calm to a busy kitchen. Example: A large abstract painting with swirling oranges, reds, and yellows could be hung above a breakfast nook or on a prominent wall near the dining area. The vibrant colors mirror the warmth and creativity of the cooking process, adding a sense of excitement to the room. Placement Considerations: Kitchens are high-traffic areas where practicality is key, so the placement of artwork should account for moisture, heat, and food splatters. Opt for pieces framed behind glass or created from durable, easy-to-clean materials like metal or acrylic. Example: In a sleek, modern kitchen with stainless steel appliances, a series of small abstract prints framed in glass can be placed on the backsplash behind the counter. The glass provides protection from cooking splatters while the art adds an unexpected pop of color. Bathrooms: Transforming Personal Retreats Bathrooms are spaces for personal care and relaxation, making them ideal for abstract art that evokes calm, tranquility, or even a touch of luxury. A thoughtfully placed abstract piece can elevate a simple bathroom into a spa-like retreat. Creating a Serene Atmosphere: In bathrooms, abstract art in soothing colors—like soft blues, greens, or pastels—can create a peaceful ambiance. These colors evoke the calming qualities of water and nature, making the room feel like a tranquil escape. Example: A bathroom decorated with white tiles and modern fixtures can be softened with an abstract painting in shades of blue and teal. Positioned above the bathtub, the artwork mirrors the calm of flowing water, turning the space into a sanctuary of relaxation. Waterproofing and Durability: Given the high humidity in bathrooms, it’s important to choose art that can withstand moisture. Water-resistant materials such as metal prints, ceramic tiles, or laminated canvas are ideal for these spaces. Example: A large abstract mural made of waterproof tiles can be installed in the shower area. The tile’s colorful, abstract design brings life to the otherwise functional space, creating a luxurious and visually stunning focal point. Unexpected Placements: Bathrooms often have smaller, overlooked areas that are perfect for art. Think about adding abstract pieces above towel racks, near mirrors, or on narrow walls to make the most of the space. Example: A small, vibrant abstract painting placed above a towel rack or beside a mirror can make a compact bathroom feel more elegant and thoughtfully designed. Utility Rooms: Elevating Practical Spaces Utility rooms and laundry areas are typically designed for function, with little thought given to aesthetics. However, these rooms are often where we spend a surprising amount of time. Incorporating abstract art into these areas can transform them from purely functional spaces into more enjoyable environments. Adding Color and Personality: Utility rooms often feature muted colors or bare walls. Adding bold abstract art can infuse energy into the space, making mundane tasks like laundry more enjoyable. Example: A vibrant abstract print featuring bold geometric patterns can be placed above a folding table in the laundry room. The bright colors and dynamic shapes add a sense of playfulness to the otherwise utilitarian space, making the room feel less like a chore and more like a creative outlet. Maximizing Wall Space: Utility rooms are often small, so wall space is precious. Use smaller abstract art pieces or create a gallery wall to make the most of limited room. Example: In a narrow utility room, a series of small, colorful abstract prints can be arranged in a vertical line, drawing the eye upward and making the space feel taller. The artwork breaks up the monotony of the room, adding interest and dimension. Functional Art: In utility spaces, art can serve dual purposes by being both decorative and practical. Consider abstract art that doubles as storage solutions, such as decorative wall hooks or sculptural shelving units. Example: In a small utility room, an abstract metal sculpture with built-in hooks can serve as a place to hang cleaning supplies or towels. This piece not only adds visual interest but also maximizes storage space, making the room more efficient. Final Thoughts: Merging Form and Function Incorporating abstract art into functional spaces like kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms is a powerful way to elevate their aesthetic appeal while maintaining their practicality. Art in these areas can make routine tasks more enjoyable, create a sense of calm, and turn overlooked spaces into design features. With thoughtful placement and careful consideration of materials, abstract art can transform even the most functional spaces into rooms that inspire creativity and joy. So, the next time you consider where to place your abstract art, don’t overlook these practical spaces. With the right approach, your kitchen, bathroom, and utility room can become as artistically inspiring as any other room in your home or office.
